An Unlikely Christmas Pie

When Amanda and I were younger, we had the tiny tradition of writing to Mrs. Claus, as well as Santa Claus.  Santa gave us great presents, but Mrs. Claus satisfied our desires for Christmas pie.  We would request certain flavors, and like clockwork two pies would appear with the toys and games.  Amanda always requested apple, but me?  I asked for grape…every single Christmas.

Now you can only imagine my mom thinking how crazy I was.  Who in the history of Christmases asked for grape pie?  It was not until I was much older that I found out that she had tricked me into eating blueberry/mixed berry all those years ago!  And I was naive enough not to question it.  But last Christmas she decided to right her wrong and make–from scratch–a grape pie.

If you are unfamiliar with the grape pie recipe, it is labor intensive–requiring each grape to be peeled by hand!  I totally understand why my mom didn’t bother with all the trouble when we were younger (she doesn’t like to bake, to boot).  But she made the special grape pie again this year, and even tweaked it to be gluten-free!  My parents, Amanda, Ethan and I ate it after a wonderful dinner Monday, and I continued to indulge in the remainder of my trip.  Vanilla ice cream on the side is a must!

If grapes are your favorite fruit or flavor, and you feel like spending some serious time in the kitchen, I recommend trying this recipe!  It is easily becoming the tastiest of Christmas traditions.
